The Common Concern of a College Freshman

Nothing can compare to the emotions that run through a 1st year college student the moment they step into their dorm room for the first time. It is then that the reality really sets in…

“I’m living on my own now!”

The best way I’d describe this feeling is immense excitement mixed with debilitating fear. Sure, now you can stay up as late as you want without having to sneak in (depending on your roommate) but now you have to wash your own clothes…This is only one of many common anxieties a college freshman may face. Perhaps one of the biggest, however, is:

How do I get around?
There is a good chance you are going to school in a completely new town or city perhaps hundreds of miles from your comfort zone. One of the first things you should do is become familiar with the area. Sure, you could spend all of your time walking around on campus, but even the most studious of individuals needs a break sometime. Maybe there is a reliable mass transit system accessible nearby. Find out where it can take you. Familiarize yourself with the nearest grocery stores, restaurants, medical facilities, shopping centers, and entertainment. If your new home is fairly spread out, perhaps you should ship your car to campus. Auto shipping conserves gas and prevents wear and tear or potential accidents on the long road trip from home to school. It also saves you valuable time, which you can use to establish new relationships and get to know your facilities. Having your own car on campus helps in cases of emergency, transporting large items like new furniture or supplies, and socially it gives you the opportunity to meet new people by carpooling.

Now that you have automotive freedom, it is time to find the best routes around the city. Is there major road construction nearby? What are the local driving laws? Where are the best places to park? Most Freshman discover that once they have fully discovered their new home it is easy to feel comfortable in any situation your new independent life might present.
